CHARTING THE UNSEEN

Born in 1862, just outside Stockholm, af Klint grew up in a naval family of cartographers, navigators and mathematicians. This background in precision and mapping informed her groundbreaking art, which can be seen as an attempt to chart the invisible realms of existence and the mysteries of the spiritual world.

The death of her younger sister in 1880 had a profound impact on af Klint, deepening her attachment to the spiritual realm and sparking her interest in séances. She began to feel that there was something more to the world than that which could be seen and touched.

She was admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm at the age of twenty, one of few women to study on equal terms with the male students. Although the sexes studied separately, the art school was progressive in that women students took life drawing classes with nude males. She excelled there, studying drawing, portraiture and landscape painting for five years before going on to a commercial art career in Stockholm, producing unremarkable but skilful works.

Her interest in spiritualism grew as she studied, but it wasn’t until the 1890s that she began to incorporate it into her work.2
